Running Microsoft Programs in Linux

Use WINE

WINE is a FREE Linux application that allows you to run some Microsoft programs on a Linux machine. It will not run all Windows programs but it will run a fair number.

To see what applications run in WINE go to their website at www.winehq.org

You can use the software to try to run your MS application and if it does NOT work, then it is not one that is supported. Photoshop CS2 is one that works very well; it is rated as a GOLD app. Call of Duty 2 is a popular game that works in the Platinum level (heighest). There is a special Wine edition of Internet Explorer that works well.

Go to the Wine Data base to search for the app you are interested in.

Commercial Linux Products

Cross Over Linux (formerly called Cross Over Office) by Codeweavers is a commercial product that allows you to run many more MS products in Linux. The newest is a version for Linux is $59.95. At this time they are offering versions XI for Linux.

The list of programs that can be run with Cross Over Linux is far greater than what WINE can run; but you are paying for the program and the SUPPORT. Yes they offer support at each level of purchase. The Linux version gives support for 1 year by allowing you to download any new update free for 1 year after purchase. You can TRY a downloaded copy FREE for 30 days.

Allows you to run many popular office productivity software applications on Linux, such as Microsoft Office, Lotus Notes, Microsoft Project and Visio, graphics applications like Macromedia Dreamweaver MX, Flash MX, and Adobe Photoshop, and many more

I have used Cross Over Linux for some time now and it is excellent even in earlier versions.

There is even a Cross OVer Mac for Apple Mac users so they can also run Microsoft programs too.

Intended for Intel Mac OS X machines, CrossOver Mac will allow Mac users to run their favorite Windows applications seamlessly on their Mac. Windows files can be opened directly within your file browser, or from email attachments. No rebooting, no switching to a virtual machine, and no Windows Operating System license required; CrossOver is a complete replacement for your Windows OS as far as your Windows software is concerned.
